Our Club Safety Practices
Culture of Safety
Boys & Girls Clubs of Detroit Lakes and Perham continually update their safety policies, programs, and training for our staff and volunteers that are designed to promote child safety and protect young people from threats that are present in our society. We implement layers of safety policies and guidelines to keep our members safe.
24-Hour Toll-Free Child Safety Hotline
We encourage all staff, members and families to report any incident or situation they feel is unsafe. Through our national partnership with Praesidium, one of the nation's leading safety experts, our club members and staff have access to a confidential and 24-hour toll-free Child Safety Hotline, 866-607-SAFE (7233) or email SafeClub@Praesidiuminc.com.
Mandatory Background Checks
All staff, board members, and volunteers who have direct, repetitive contact with children must complete a mandatory criminal background check prior to having contact with children, and annually thereafter. Name-based or finger print-based record searches may be used in any combination, but will, at a minimum:
• Verify the person's identity and legal aliases through verification of a social security number
• Provide a National Sex Offender Registry search
• Provide a comprehensive criminal search, which includes a national search
• Provide a comprehensive local criminal search, which includes a state-wide criminal search or county level criminal search
Required Immediate Reporting
Staff and volunteers are all mandated reporters. Staff and volunteers are required to report any critical incident/safety concern to local authorities immediately. Additionally, we are required to report any critical incident to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America within 24 hours.
Mandatory Annual Safety Assessments
We complete a safety assessment each year to ensure we continually make improvements to our safety protocols at each of our Club sites.

Safety Trainings
On-going training and supervision of staff is critical. We participate in a wide variety of child safety training conducted such as seminars, conferences and webinars.
Safety Committee
A dedicated Safety Committee is organized specifically to provide input and guidance on local policies and safety strategies. This committee is set and stewarded by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Detroit Lakes & Perham Board of Directors.
Our board-led Safety Committee meets quarterly and if the need becomes apparent sooner. The committee also completes quarterly inspections at all Club sites.
Mandatory Employee Reference
Any employee interested in moving to another Boys & Girls Club affiliate is required to have a reference from the previous Club, even if the two Clubs are within the same community.
State and Local Laws
We comply with federal, state and local safety laws, including those impacting our facilities and Club-owned vehicles.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Detroit Lakes & Perham are certified childcare centers through the MN Department of Children, Youth and Families.
